It wasn't an easy transition--it meant more school, on-the-job training, and lots more exams at a time of life when she could well have thought that exams were behind her forever.
"In Austin, I've got half-a-dozen or more schools on a list to be closed — one of which I presented a federal blue-ribbon award to for excellence," said Representative Lloyd Doggett.
If its governors wish to, they could also create more schools on the same lines.
"We are going to see a lot more schools on the failing list because of special education," she said.
They are the innovative but unelected regional schools commissioners, whose job is to do what local authority advisers used to do, but with hundreds more schools on their books.
Town officials said they would also like more schools to locate on the land.
A dozen more school districts on Long Island will install them within the next six months, Mr. Tarulli said.
This year, two more schools modeled on P-Tech opened in New York City, with three more expected to open next year.
There are currently 1,776 academies in England and more schools plan on converting to academy-status.
