The safety engineers worry that tall sport utility vehicles are more likely to roll over, more likely to override the bumpers and doorsills of lower-riding cars and more likely to blind other drivers with high-mounted headlights.
The combination, they said, made the tires more likely to come apart at high speeds and the vehicles more likely to roll over as a result.
But higher pressures also make the ride bumpier and can make a vehicle more likely to roll over even without a tire failure.
