Compared to other calcium phosphates which require five years or more to be resorbed by the host bone[ 55, 56], Alpha BSM® appears to undergo more rapid resorption[ 22, 52].
However, dynamic histomorphometry and 3D morphometry data showed that less newly mineralized bone was formed (e.g. Ec.MS/BS: −48%, Ps.MS/BS: −47%, MV/BVday0 15: −19%, p < 0.044) and more bone was resorbed (ES/BSday0 15: +11.5%, p = 0.002 and EV/BVday0 15: +2.2%, p = 0.001) in control limbs of adult compared to young LC mice over the 15 day experimental period (Figs. 3 5).
The powder type is believed to be resorbed more slowly than the other two types, as the time of demineralization is less than that of the block type, which makes it possible to maintain a space for bone formation and to prevent unfavorable stress without a titanium sheet.
In the present study, cortical ICB was used because it is resorbed more slowly than the cancellous type.
In these cases the bony part of the graft was resorbed more slowly compared to the controls and bone remodelling followed the classical principle of creeping substitution [ 39].
Without PEDF the differentiation of pre-osteoclasts is increased and more bone will be resorbed.
Most grafted ICB particles were resorbed, whereas more MBCP+ and Bio-Oss particles remained in a partially resorbed state.
On the other hand, all the bone that formed was more or less totally resorbed behind the thin new-forming bone front.
The HP group showed a significantly higher number of cathepsin K-positive cells compared to the TCP group; this indicated that the HA/PDLLA scaffold was more likely to be resorbed by osteoclast-like cells than was the β-TCP scaffold.
We confirmed the suitability of the resulting macroporous self-setting foam as a bone filler in vivo in rabbits, clearly demonstrating that the macroporous structure was maintained after implantation and that the foam resorbed significantly more rapidly compared to non-foamed cements [4].
