Gene expression is "noisy" – some cells express more of the red fluorescent protein while others express more of the green one.
Small clusters of two or more red and green fluorescent trypanosomes, as well as clusters of single color trypanosomes, were observed within 10 min of mixing the red and green fluorescent SG-derived parental cells.
The images of green fluorescence (green fluorescent protein, gfp) and red fluorescence (red fluorescent particles, rfp) were taken after exposure times of 100 and 500 ms, respectively.

More recently, our group developed a red fluorescent protein-expressing HCC cell line, HCCLM3-RFP (HCCLM3-R), whose xenograft models in nude mice can provide a real-time observation of tumor growth and metastasis [ 13– 15].
Zebrafish were labeled as having large clusters when 50% or more of the brain area contained red fluorescent bacteria, medium clusters when 10 50% was infected and small clusters when less than 10% was infected (Fig. 2C E).
To determine the co-transduction efficiency specifically in PR, and to test another red fluorescent reporter possibly more potent than DsRed, we repeated the injection in mice with a mixture of AAV2/8-CMV-EGFP and-RFP vectors (dose of each vector/eye: 1.4 × 10 GC/eye) and analyzed co-transduction on retinal cryosections which allow to unequivocably identify PR from RPE (supplementary Fig S2).
What's more, the red-fluorescent CQDs were encapsulated by liposomes, providing good biocompatibility and excellent in vitro and in vivo imaging capabilities.
