Unlike many archaea, which thrive in boiling hot sulfuric acid or within Arctic ice sheets, the Thaumarchaea prefer the much more moderate environment of temperate ocean waters and soils.
"These sites extend the residence time of humans above 4,000 [meters above sea level] by nearly a millennium," the study authors wrote, "implying more moderate late-glacial Andean environments and greater physiological capabilities for Pleistocene humans than previously assumed".
And even for those with more moderate cases, cues in the environment can be valuable aids.
Even the handful of Republicans who have won statewide races since 1980 have been far more moderate than Mr. Bush on issues like the environment, abortion and gay rights.
Though the country is now embracing change and welcoming visitors under the more moderate rule of Bin Taimur's son, its mountain and desert environment, Islamic traditions and laid-back charm remain largely intact.
"It is still over all an environment where consumers continue to use restaurants, but for the industry, it's a more moderate growth rate than in the past," Mr. Riehle said.
More moderate voices seemed rare.
