Using a more lenient criterion (e.g., 0.02 or 0.01) increases precision but at the cost of some upward bias in the estimates that is not modeled here.
To search for other possible candidate regions for future studies, we reported results with a slightly more lenient criterion (p < 0.001, uncorrected, cluster size >50 mm; see Results and Discussion).
Applying a narrow definition, i.e., neglecting the externality, the consumer welfare (CW) standard can result in a more lenient criterion than the total welfare (TW) standard, which is in contrast to the general view in the literature.
As with the MPFC cluster, a more lenient criterion for defining the cluster resulted in the inclusion of TT voxels from all subjects in the cluster (Supplementary Fig. 5).
Table 3 shows that β was lower in the high-load condition than in the low-load condition, F 1, 12) = 7.99, p =.015, ηp =.400, demonstrating again a more lenient criterion in the high-load condition, as in Experiment 2, involving increased false alarm responses under high load (see Tables 2 and 3).
As can be seen in Table 2, β was significantly lower in the high-perceptual-load than in the low-perceptual-load condition, F 1, 16) = 7.26, p =.016, ηp =.312, indicating a more lenient criterion in the high-load condition.

The differences between our study data and theirs might be explained by the more lenient criteria they used for defining normal grip strength, which perhaps underestimated the numbers of individuals with subnormal grip strength.
A failure to find statistically significant differences across the whole-brain may have prompted some studies to investigate case control differences within hypothesis-driven regions of interest (ROI), which apply more lenient criteria for evaluating the statistical significance of results.
From a practical standpoint, these results suggest that adopting more lenient criteria for ordering DST for TB patients at individual health centers where risk for MDR TB is highest may be a rational approach while resources are limited.
We note that in two of our four experiments, visual perceptual load also led to a change in response criterion: High perceptual load led participants to use a more lenient response criterion, resulting in a greater rate of false alarms.
The decision to include this weight limit is based on a recent large meta-analysis which suggests that AN with a more lenient weight criterion and without amenorrhoea is very similar to strict diagnostic AN, as long as BMI < 18.5 is set [ 25].
