More than 16,000 dead pigs have been found floating in rivers that provide drinking water to Shanghai.
BEIJING — More than 3,300 dead pigs have been found in a major river that flows through Shanghai, igniting fears among city residents of contaminated tap water, according to official reports on Tuesday.
China was stunned a year ago by the appearance of more than 16,000 dead pigs floating along parts of the Huangpu river, which flows through Shanghai – one of a series of food safety scandals in recent years.
This area of Zhejiang province, 60 miles from Shanghai, has become the subject of public and media scrutiny after more than 16,000 dead pigs were found in tributaries of the city's river, the Huangpu, a source of tapwater.
An inquiry has been launched in China after more than 900 dead pigs were found floating in a river near the eastern city of Shanghai.
Further, farms where dead pigs are collected were more likely to test PRRSV positive compared to those using on-farm incinerators, farms in high pig density areas had also higher odds to test positive for PRRSV.
It says the men and their group bought 77,000 dead pigs in a period of more than two years.
"You can see dead pigs here every year, but there are more now than in the past few years," a local man told the station.
A surge in the number of dead pigs dumped upstream from Shanghai - with more than 2,800 carcasses floating into the financial hub through Monday - has followed a police campaign to curb the illicit trade in sick pig parts.
The number of dead pigs found in a river near Shanghai rose to more than 13,000 over the weekend.
