The first series of Edgar Reitz's "Heimat," an intimate epic of twentieth-century Germany, appeared on television in 1984; since then, the director has added two more cycles, in 1993 and 2004, and the whole batch, "Heimat / Heimat 2 / Heimat 3" (Nov. 23), is coming out in a seventeen-disk set.
