This method, based on the signature of the pressure waves during their propagation, requires lower computational efforts, gives results with a precision equivalent to those obtained by conventional methods, and permits to investigate more complex situations of train circulation in simple tunnel.
The slope in sea level across the Gulf Stream has been measured by satellite radar altimeter to be one metre over a horizontal distance of 100 km (62 miles), which is sufficient to cause a surface geostrophic current of one metre per second at 43° N. The large-scale circulation of the Gulf Stream system is, however, only one aspect of a far more complex and richer structure of circulation.
Models have been developed across a variety of scales to give a global picture (e.g. physical and biological oceanography, modelling ocean- or global-scale circulation) or more complex local detail (e.g. eddy-scale processes, ecosystem dynamics).
