Higher HbA1c (poorer metabolic control) and less adequate adolescent self-care were associated with lower levels of family functioning, more adolescent behavioural difficulties and poorer adolescent mental health.
Children born to light drinkers had more favourable (lower) behavioural difficulties scores than those born to mothers in the not in pregnancy group.
These functional deficits persist in adolescence and early adulthood, with continued lower IQ scores and poorer academic achievement, as well as more behavioural and emotional difficulties than their NBW peers [ 12].
These studies also reported that young people who did not live with both of their parents displayed more behavioural disorders and difficulties at school, and sought specialised care more. 1 In Denmark, a national study in a cohort that comprised children aged 0 15 born between 1977 and 2004 was carried out.
An earlier clinical study of behavioural and emotional difficulties found that children with TTH have more behavioural, emotional and temperamental difficulties than those with migraine [28] while a later study from a paediatric headache centre found the reverse [31].
Despite this knowledge, the study showed that children are often left in the home for much longer, vulnerable to continuing abuse and demonstrating more evident developmental and behavioural difficulties "often whilst professionals waited fruitlessly for parents to change".
The damage done by illiteracy is undeniable, with more and more cases of school exclusion, truancy and behavioural difficulties – into adulthood, low literacy has been associated with poor mental health.
Edward Duff, of the Children's Legal Centre at Essex University, said: "Every case of persistent disruption in my experience has led to SEN involvement and we need to find out more about how much screening for behavioural difficulties and special needs is going on.
Based on these initial results, we therefore set out to investigate these behavioural difficulties in a more detailed and quantitative fashion within a British Kawasaki disease patient cohort.
