Telecommunications service providers want more bandwidth, or capacity, to handle the exploding amount of Internet traffic on their networks.
Xirrus claims its kit supports up to four times more coverage, and eight times more bandwidth and capacity than "conventional AP technology".
It has 2,400 TV monitors, 600 security cameras, 370 point-of-sale terminals, 49 miles of beer-carrying pipes, and an enormous new fiber system to give it 40 times more internet bandwidth capacity than any known US stadium.
Such companies may include the Ciena Corporation and Tellabs, which make products that allow carriers to use bandwidth more efficiently instead of spending more to expand bandwidth capacity.
It can significantly improve the performance of these networks, the channel capacity (in mobile ad hoc networks, especially single-channel ones, capacity is a more appropriate term than bandwidth, capacity is measured in bits/s and bandwidth in Hz) and battery power of which are limited.
Another class to attend, another item to tick off the to-do list – all use up more bandwidth, potentially impairing people's capacities more than improving them.
Existing plans suggest that between 1998 and 2001, the world's terrestrial fiber bandwidth capacity will rise 25 times more than undersea capacity will.
"This could prove critical in averting a global spectrum capacity crunch, as consumers demand more bandwidth over different devices," noted Ed Richards, Ofcom Chief Executive, in a statement.
