Although both groups of BRSV-Snk infected calves in study 1 and 2 shed high amounts of virus, as detected by RT-qPCR, calves in study 2 shed less accumulated virus in nasal secretions compared to those in study 1 (log10 1.6 TCID50 eq. difference in mean), but more in BAL fluid on PID 7 (log10 2.1 TCID50 eq. difference in mean).
Although the purpose of our study was not to evaluate the performance value of GM antigen measurement, our results suggest that its detection is more efficient in BAL fluid than in plasma to discriminate between proven/putative IPA and Aspergillus colonization, in line with a previous prospective study conducted in non-ARDS critically ill patients [30].
Interestingly, eosinophilic cationic protein 2 (ECP2) was more pronounced in BAL from the NA group.
Note that multiple lobes were lavaged at the time of bronchoscopy in most subjects, resulting in an average of more than one BAL sample per episode.
The isolated bacteria with a count of 104 cfu/mL or more of the BAL fluid were considered as the aetiological agents of CAP [ 22].
Subjects in the PS group had a relatively higher number of neutrophils than did non-PS group subjects, who had more eosinophils in BAL fluid (BALF) (Table 2).
However, Table 2 highlights an important weakness of aetiological diagnosis based on a threshold; Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 50% more cases in BAL samples as compared with PSB samples, using the recommended threshold.
