Systematic investigation of the phase changes of the more common anhydrous mineral groups was initiated by the Canadian-born American petrologist Norman L. Bowen and his coworkers at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C., in the early 20th century.
Furthermore, partial melt of hydrous oceanic crust also incorporates more F than anhydrous minerals (garnet, cpx), and shows compatibility for amphibole near unity (Van den Bleeken and Koga, personal communication about submitted manuscript).
A typical ~10 μm CP IDP, like the one shown in Fig. 1, is an aggregate of more than 104 anhydrous grains, mostly sub-micron in size, consisting predominantly of silicates, mostly olivine, pyroxene, glass with embedded metal and sulfide (GEMS), and rarer Fe-sulfide grains.
