Created in 1984 to save the once-endangered uakari monkey, the reserve is the most carefully managed and protected part of the Amazon – and is also home to what many consider Brazil's most successful sustainable tourist resort, the Uakari Floating Lodge.

On February 8th the High Court in Delhi ordered its rulers to consider expelling an estimated 6,000 urban monkeys to a reserve outside the city.

Since 2000 he has worked among the monkey troops in the reserve, trying to understand how individual identity informs behavior and group dynamics, and how tourism is affecting the primates' intricate society.
He hopes descendants of these monkeys will spread beyond the reserve to repopulate nearby mountains just as other scientists will continue the work he has started.
