Sampling ports were installed along the length of each tank, and at three different depths, in order to facilitate three-dimensional monitoring of nutrient distribution over the period of study (11 months).
Detection and monitoring of nutrient enrichment and associated impacts in the Great Barrier Reef require a focus on the analysis of long-term in-situ data (Furnas et al. 2011 Schaffelke et al. 2012) and the inclusion of data collected over high flow events.

The results of this study can serve as a baseline for the long-term monitoring of greenhouse nutrient loads and can be used in the design of new guidelines to reduce nutrient loads from plastic greenhouse cultivation.
For optimal reproducibility and comparability of single experiments a process in a bioreactor was developed allowing direct monitoring and prevention of nutrient or oxygen limitations.
