An experiment examined the impact of indirect social monitoring on memory distortions found in 'egoistic self-enhancers', that is, individuals prone to self-reporting enhanced traits related to social status and dominance (Paulhus & John, 1998).
Medial PFC and supplementary motor areas exhibited activity differences that were specific to the reality monitoring of action memories, consistent with memory for performed actions relying on monitoring of internally generated motoric processes and externally derived sensory perceptual details.
