UNICEF will also collaborate with other agencies in the UN Country Team, particularly in the monitoring and reporting of grave child rights violations.
The government's commitment is in line with Myanmar national law and international best practice and is part of an action plan agreed in June 2012 by the Government of Myanmar and the United Nations Country Task Force on the monitoring and reporting of grave violations of children's rights.
The plan is the result of years of negotiation between the Government and United Nations led by UNICEF and the Office of the Resident Coordinator on behalf of a Country Task Force on Monitoring and Reporting of grave violations of child rights in armed conflict (CTFMR) comprising UNDP, UNHCR, UNOCHA, ILO, WFP, UNFPA, World Vision and Save the Children.
International monitors have spoken of grave irregularities and even possible fraud but have not said that the vote should be nullified.
While it is impossible to know the number of children forcibly recruited in 2012, partner reports through the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism of Grave Violations showed 2,008 boys and 43 girls recruited (this number is likely to rise).
