Classical nucleation theory suggests that nucleation probability decreases with solution viscosity, which can explain molecular weight trends, but not the underlying activity seen here.
A high-molecular-weight trend of decreasing C contents with carbon number (Fig. 3) may be explained as a mixing trend with labile and refractory organic matter end members.
A recognized low-molecular-weight trend with increasing C contents with increasing carbon number in the C5 to C10 range (Fig. 3) could also represent a mixing trend if the very smallest aromatic units were produced concomitantly with the larger refractory organic matter units.
The composite membranes also showed a consistent molecular weight cutoff trend with both positively and negatively charged dyes (Fig. 5e and Supplementary Fig. 27).
The in vitro degradation studies demonstrated that the trend in molecular weight loss was not significantly influenced by the presence of small quantities of PF-108.
Dynamic rheological properties support the trends of molecular weight degradation and dispersion of clay.
Active compounds (AA and BA) have a slightly higher molecular mass distribution than inactive ones (AI and BI), in keeping with the generally observed trend that adding molecular weight is associated with higher target affinity.
Nonetheless, as described above, gel permeation chromatography is a form of size exclusion chromatography so it is not surprising that the form in Fig. 3 somewhat matches with that in Fig. 2b despite more scatter in the molecular weight curve compared to the smoother trend for the viscosity as a function of severity.
As a trend, higher HES molecular weight seems to sustain cell viability (with notable exception for protocol 5) but only in FCS not in DMEM.
A statistically significant inverse trend was also found when assigning an indicator variable to rank analytes according to the number of chlorine atoms, though it was not as strong as the trend observed for molecular weight (data not shown).
Serum organochlorine concentrations were two- to three-fold greater than in follicular fluid, and a significant inverse trend was observed in the distribution of follicular fluid:serum ratios with increasing molecular weight of the compound (p-value for trend < 0.0001).
