This age-related increase of GFAP staining was particularly evident in the molecular layer of cerebellar cortex where the size and number of areas with intensely GFAP-immunoreactive astrocytes correlated with increased age, and loss of calbindin immunoreactivity which in cerebellum represents a selective marker for Purkinje cells (Supplementary Fig. 2).
While the specific identity of these molecular, granule cell and white matter layer cells is unknown, their size, morphology and location suggest they are glia, although the molecular layer cells could also be basket/stellate cells.
