The Angora Fire burned into 194 ha of fuel treatments intended to modify fire behavior and protect private and public assets in the Angora Creek watershed.
Fuel reduction treatments also influence forest C balance both through their potential to modify fire behavior in recently treated forest stands, and because the treatments themselves remove woody biomass from the forest [1]-[4].
Societies that are confronted with potentially destructive forest or wildland fires develop fire management organizations to modify fire's impact on people, the things they value, and the ecosystems about which they are concerned.
However, the introduction of fuel treatments modified fire behavior; we find that in a selected comparison of a treated and untreated forest stand that both burn in a wildfire, the treated stand maintains more live tree C and total stand C in 2100 than the untreated stand, due to the difference in wildfire fire intensity and severity following forest treatment (Table 2).
Fuel treatments are an important management tool in the drier forests of this region where they have been shown to modify fire behavior and fire effects, yet we know relatively little about how treatments will interact with changing climate and expanding human populations to influence fire regimes and ecosystem services over larger area and longer time periods.

Given the association of these species with closed canopy forests for resting, denning, roosting, and nesting, their protection is of particular management concern because their habitats have been heavily impacted by logging and modified fire regimes.
