Prior acute or chronic heart failure, prior cor-pulmonale and pulmonary hypertension were evaluated using a combination of International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification version 9.0 diagnostic codes, pre-hospitalization echocardiogram and hemodynamic catheterization data.
As part of the 9th revision of the ICD, the United States adapted a "Clinical Modification" version that has been in utilization as the ICD-9-CM and contains both diagnosis and procedural codes with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) overseeing changes.

After modification, the second version (version 1.0) of the CDSS enabled automatic switching of 91.6% of the cases without any inadequate suggestions.
However, only the modifications in version 9 introduced a smell in the class.
