CTCF is a protein with complex roles in gene regulation, having been shown to act as both transcriptional activator and repressor, and be responsible for two features of genomic "boundary elements," namely the abilities to separate chromatin with activating and inactivating histone modifications and to block enhancer-promoter interactions (recently reviewed in [14]).
This modification was designed to block the activation signal generation, based on our previous observations that the satellite cell activation in response to mechanical stimulation only occurred between pH 7.1 and 7.5.
However, flax plants from field trial with the modification targeted directly to block lignin biosynthesis were characterized not only by reduced lignin level (in one transgenic line), but also by altered amount and organization of the other cell wall components.
The major finding of our paper is that the modification targeted directly to block lignin synthesis caused not only reduced lignin level in fibre, but also affected amount and organization of cellulose and pectin.
