In layered soils, there are multiple modes in the surface-wave field.
Four control modes of surface area change in a motion circle are investigated, namely, complete traditional invariable fin, traditional invariable fin with smaller surface, fin with larger surface during in-strokes and fin with larger surface during out-strokes.
Indeed, the energy fed in surface modes and the light directly transmitted to the far field by the aperture being the same between SH and BE, the continuous increase in gain can therefore only be due to SP and evanescent near-field contributions which cannot be radiatively back-converted in the absence of grating in the SH case.
As a consistency check, we compare modal growth rates to energy growth rates in nonlinear simulations and record relative discrepancy smaller than 10−5 for the least stable mode in free-surface flow at Re="3×104.
Figure 3 also shows that when the impedance ratio is not larger than 6, the SW H/V of cap-layered medium agrees well with the FW H/V of two-layered medium in the period range, e.g., 0.1Tp0 5Tp0, even if only the contributions from fundamental to the fifth higher modes of surface waves are included in the SW H/V.
