Traditionally, the focus in low-income settings among those expected to lead such units has been on technical competence, yet it is increasingly recognized that leadership, supervision, information dissemination and communication are major mediators and moderators of the quality and effectiveness of health care [ 9, 10].
Recent research in quality management has recognized the role of context and moderators of the relationship between quality management practices and performance.
A process evaluation will assess fidelity of intervention delivery and explore potential mediators and moderators of changes in health-related quality of life in intervention and control group patients.
