It is shown that incorporation of proper Ta5+ into WO3 can induce moderate defects and oxygen vacancies, as well as intercalate a higher amount of protons, which enhance the electron transfer and short the protons diffusion paths.
As determined by electrochemical measurement, the α-MnO2 prepared at 80 °C with moderate defects and electrical conductivity exhibits superior ORR performance with a potential of 0.79 V at a current density of −3 mA cm−2, which is considered outstanding for manganese oxides.
In contrast, depletion of MVB-12 resulted in more moderate defects.
