Building on previous models of help-seeking behaviour, particularly the work of Murray [ 21], on the basis of the responses of the adolescents with a lifetime history of DSH we suggest a model of help-seeking which combines factors that operate both before and after an episode of DSH.
Results from logistic regression models of helping grandchildren with money or material goods (not shown) showed that provision of such help was positively associated with living with a grandchild for both grandfathers and grandmothers and that grandfathers who did not know the age of their youngest grandchild were less likely to provide material help.
What the research – drawing on 219 expert contributions – also suggests is that the UK has developed a model of help in this area which is far more effective for men than for women.
