Is "clicktivism" just a cop out or can mobile tech actually stimulate altruism and accelerate new models of helping each other?
For years now, homeless service agencies have been bashed as "old technology," still stuck in 1980s models of helping people who are homeless.
Research to refine and test models of help-seeking for mental disorders is warranted.
The conceptual framework was developed with cancer in mind, but, as with models of help-seeking behaviour, may also be applicable to other illnesses (Scott et al, 2012).
Thus, our review must be considered in combination with the literature on models of help-seeking/consultation behaviour (Scott et al, 2012; Wyke et al, 2013) and wider integration with psychological theory (e.g., social cognitive theory; Bandura, 1997).
Models of help-seeking recognise that, when bodily or social functioning is disrupted, people evaluate their experiences in relation to 'illness representations' or 'stocks of knowledge' that help them make sense of their symptoms and decide on appropriate actions.
Further research underpinned by models of help-seeking which facilitate the design of interventions are required if we are to address the substantial public health problems associated with the common mental disorders of depression and anxiety.
Building on previous models of help-seeking behaviour, particularly the work of Murray [ 21], on the basis of the responses of the adolescents with a lifetime history of DSH we suggest a model of help-seeking which combines factors that operate both before and after an episode of DSH.
Results from logistic regression models of helping grandchildren with money or material goods (not shown) showed that provision of such help was positively associated with living with a grandchild for both grandfathers and grandmothers and that grandfathers who did not know the age of their youngest grandchild were less likely to provide material help.
What the research – drawing on 219 expert contributions – also suggests is that the UK has developed a model of help in this area which is far more effective for men than for women.
