At the northern edge of the Molasse Basin the modelled depth of the 100 °C isotherm decreases from 3800 m bsl at the edge of the basin to 2200 m bsl in the central part.

To compare the trends with the modelled scaled depths, in situ observations were converted to scaled depths using Equation 7. Data used for each waterhole for validation are shown in Table 3.
Validation of modelled scaled depths with field-installed gauge data demonstrated the ability of the model to capture both the spatial patterns and seasonal variations.

Results of the 2D thermal modelling for greater depths (Figure 17) demonstrate that the modelled temperature is around 120°C at a depth of 5000 m, around 141°C at a depth of 6000 m and 100°C isotherm has been modelled at around a depth of 4130 m. The comparison of modelled and measured temperature-depth plots (Figure 16) demonstrates a very good fit in the case when the palaeoclimatic perturbations (Figure 12) have been considered during the 2D thermal simulations.
We analysed, using a Generalised Additive Model (GAM) and the model-selection approach Akaike Information Criterion AICC), the influence of in-situ measured depth and GIS-modelled terrain structures, wave exposure and current speed on the distribution of soft sediment measured using a Sediment Profile Image (SPI) camera.
