The data are first corrected for the DCO model over the time span of interest (process 2a), and the residuals are next used to compute a model itself used to further correct the data in the way described above (process 3).
The gufm1 main geomagnetic field model, covering the time span 1590 1990, was used to obtain time series of the radial component at the core surface (core-mantle boundary CMB), Zc, in a 2.5° × 2.5° latitude/longitude grid, between 70°S and 70°N.
The obtained model is robust over the time span of the data.
The estimated B-splines exhibit very moderate accelerations (in the case of the full model, see Fig. 6), and it may be possible to simplify the parameterisation of the time dependence in future models, e.g. to an exponential saturation in time as this is the expected behaviour of the VFM instrument sensitivity; however, an exponential model is ill-conditioned on the time span of data used here.
Market Model Estimation Window (Fig. 3) is the time span used to estimate the Market Model coefficients prior to the Pre-Event Window to avoid any interaction with the Event Window.

The result is sensitive to assumptions about the extrapolation of the treatment effects of ART, but stable to discounting, extending the time span of the model evaluation and the inclusion of separate cost of dying.
