"Most investigators who work with living systems use mammalian species as model systems," says director David Petering, a professor of chemistry at UW Milwaukee.
The computer science carried out at the centre will focus on mimicking the behaviour of biological systems to develop new concepts and programming languages adapted to the modelling of complex systems, says Corrado Priami, president of the centre, in an e-mail.
"It looks like a scale model of our solar system," said Scott Gaudi, an assistant professor of astronomy at Ohio State University.
"It shows the power of the fusion between mouse genetics and model systems in genomics," says Copeland.
The HHMI grants confirm Arabidopsis "is still the Rolls Royce of model systems in plant biology," says Dangl. "If you want to understand mechanisms that are generic to plant biology, the best tool kit is Arabidopsis, and to keep drilling in that tool kit will continue to enable applied research".
"Given the limitations of working with human studies," she says, "researching model systems like this is where I think the frontier lies".
"With advances in technology made possible through research funding from The ALS Association, different approaches to minimize the use of these model systems are being developed," the statement said (via the Wall Street Journal).
"The U.S. has long had an interest in the success of the one country, two systems model," he said.
"Windows 2000 is just more proprietary technology that certainly will not slow the avalanche of activity that's moving over to the open source operating system model," says Bob Young, founder and chairman of Red Hat Software rhat, the leading distributor of Linux.
"We know the model works; now we want to focus on improving the system," says Ellen Collins.
