The Pyrrhonians thought that there were modes which could induce withholding assent to the results of reasoning.
The current work shows that trailing-edge serrations reduce noise by producing scattered waves with spanwise modes which could be evanescent, and explains why some serrated geometries are more effective than others in suppressing noise.
Such waves, called solitons, usually travel with just one excited "mode" or intensity peak, but in the 25 May issue of Physical Review Letters a team reports that a crystal can focus laser light into a soliton with multiple modes, which could carry information.
Inhomogeneities of orographic wave sources and conditions of OGW propagation may lead to the generation of additional PW modes, which could have contributed to the results in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 (e.g., Holton 1984; McLandress and McFarlane 1993; Watson and Gray 2015; Gavrilov et al. 2013b).
