Tipstreaming in simple shear flows is a mode of droplet break-up in which the droplet develops a sigmoidal shape and a stream of tiny droplets is ruptured off the tips of the drop.
This mode of droplet dosing does not require mechanical agitation of the droplet interface and is tunable over several orders of magnitude.

In this article, a new mode of droplets manipulation is presented and applied for simultaneous multiplexed DNA detection.
Proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to identify the different modes of droplet shape oscillation and quantitatively assess the droplet oscillation and spectral response.
The modes of droplet oscillation show a band of dominant frequencies near the corresponding natural frequency, further proving that there is no particular forcing frequency involved.
Our experimental investigation involves the systematic study of the effects of initial droplet volume, flow rate and viscosity ratio on the various modes of droplet motion and deformation; this is performed via direct visualisation of the flow in a glass cell using a high-speed camera.
In one of our previous studies, we have shown that the oscillation mode of the droplet changes when allowed to evaporate.
It was also found that the wettability gradient does not always agree with the roughness gradient, which depends on the wetting mode of the droplets.
While it is unlikely that this could explain the 'missing' Mode 2 of droplets, it would explain why the modeled CCN are actually so small (r < 0.3 μm) that they would not be detectable by LCPS.
It is therefore suggested that cooperation between the initial distribution of passive tracer and moving mode of the inner droplet should be taken into consideration to better modulate the mixing inside droplet when designing the geometries for droplet-based microfluidics.
The qualitative and quantitative agreement of amplitude-response and phase-response curves and limit cycles of the model dynamical system with that observed experimentally suggest that the bulk oscillations in the fundamental mode of a sessile droplet can be very well modeled by a Duffing oscillator with a hard spring, especially near the resonance.
