To err on the side of caution, however, there must be a greater impetus on randomised clinical trials of such a treatment strategy across all modalities of surgery, including orthopaedics and trauma, since the physiology and clotting changes that occur during cardiac surgery do not necessarily occur during general orthopaedic surgery.
van de Vijver and colleagues [ 3] used a 'validation set' (see below) containing patients treated with different modalities of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy over 11 years.
Treatment of oral cancer has relied primarily on the "classical" modalities of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy and combinations of these methods [ 3].
If so, then antibody PS conjugates such as SIP L19)–PS may greatly extend the applicability of immuno-PDT in the clinic, sparing many skin cancer patients the more invasive treatment modalities of surgery and radiotherapy.
There were no differences found in the ASA grade, deprivation level, modality of surgery, or 30-day mortality between groups.
Additional clinical data collected from these patients included age, gender, pathologic stage, histologic type, surgical treatment modalities, frequency of surgery, surgical methods, date of operation, date of initial diagnosis of lung cancer and date of discharge.
All patients who received any of the following modalities of treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormonotherapy) were analysed when estimating survival.

The CAM user group was more likely to have had more intensive therapy for breast cancer, 30% of patients in the CAM group had all three modalities of treatment; surgery, chemotherapy and radiation in comparison with 14% in the non CAM user group (Table 1).
The overall relative survival and the relative survival for each factor (disease extent, treatment modality, type of surgery, socioeconomic status, time period, surgeon and hospital workload) were estimated using the Kaplan Meier method.
