As the 20th century brought with it the rise of athleticism and the lure of the flapper, concepts of comfort, mobility and bodily display began to offset the canons of stoicism, sedateness and modesty that had required cumbrous layers of clothing.
Drawing on and extending Foucault's account of disciplinary power, Bartky analyzes the disciplinary practices that engender specifically feminine docile bodies — including dieting practices, limitations on gestures and mobility, and bodily ornamentation.
Two items from the SF-12 addressed self-rated mobility difficulty and bodily pain.
Specifically, we expect to see strong correlation between these pairs of subscales: mobility and physical functioning; pain and bodily pain; anxiety/depression and mental health.
Moderate changes (≥ 0.5) were observed in joint mobility (VAS), sensibility, grip strength, dexterity and bodily pain (SF-36) (Table 2).
The floor effect ranged from 1.2%to2.5%5% in the domains of Mobility, ADL, Emotional Well-being, Cognition and Bodily Discomfort, while for the domains of Stigma, Social Support and Communication it ranged from 16% to 24%, which was more than hypothesized.
When comparing domains by disease duration those hypothesised as being significantly different were confirmed (Mobility, Activities of Daily Living, Cognitive Impairment, Communication and Bodily Discomfort).
The item-item correlations of mean domain scores were moderate ranging from 0.67 between Mobility and Activities of Daily Living to 0.2 between Communication and Bodily Discomfort (Table 3) as expected.
Construct validity was evaluated for aspects of convergent and discriminant validity by the Multitrait-Multimethod matrix (MTMM) [ 13] based on five comparable domains, including pain, physical mobility, emotional reactions, energy and social isolation for the NHP and bodily pain, physical functioning, mental health, vitality and social functioning for the SF-36 (Table 2).
The results of this study show that adults with IRD have poorer self-reported health status than those without arthritis in all domains of living, but particularly with respect to scales measuring aspects of physical functioning or mobility, role limitation due to physical health problems and usual activities, and bodily pain.
The measure totals 39 items, assessing eight domains of health; Mobility, Activities of Daily Living, Emotional Well-Being, Stigma, Social Support, Cognitions, Communication and Bodily Discomfort.
