One of the tradeoffs that users have always had to accept with handheld devices has been the device's limitation in graphics capabilities, according to Gerry Purdy, industry analyst at Mobile Insights, a Mountain View, Calif.-based research firm.
"Palm does a few things and it does them well, but it needs to make its operating system more complex," says Theresa Nozick, an analyst with Mobile Insights in Mountain View, Calif.
"What's happened is that Windows CE has made more license sales into the embedded market than into the retail market," contends Gerry Purdy, an analyst with Mountain View, Calif.-based Mobile Insights.
James Purdy, of Mountain View, Calif.-based Mobile Insights, projects that handhelds will continue to serve users seeking snippets of text from the web, but full-blown web interaction will increasingly be the preserve of the new "companion PC"–lightweight, keyboard-equipped devices that Microsoft is expected to introduce in the fourth quarter of this year.
Like Facebook acquisition Onavo, which offered detailed and exact mobile insights by nature of having a consumer-facing data compression utility on the App Store, SimilarGroup provides a data compression utility, too.
