A key role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy has been attributed to hyperglycemia as it leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and the mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and, subsequently, to cell death and kidney dysfunction [ 4].
