For this analysis, as shown in Figure 2, we excluded 300 births to women whose usual place of residence was interstate/overseas/unknown; 253 twin/triplet births; as well as 2,721 cases with incomplete data for the variables we used in the multivariable analyses (two-thirds of incomplete cases had missing smoking or alcohol data).
Ironically, I still miss smoking.
The primary analysis excluded the 10% of individuals with missing data on smoking, alcohol, or BMI; these patients were included in later sensitivity analyses with missing category and multiple imputation methods to deal with the missing covariates.
The primary analysis excluded 9.2% of individuals with missing data on smoking, alcohol, BMI or socioeconomic status.
Thirdly, we repeated the analysis including the 10% of patients with missing data on smoking, alcohol status, or BMI.
Missing values for cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and dietary factors gave rise to diminished number of cases and controls.
For the present analyses, we excluded 1,368 men because of prevalent type 2 diabetes (n = 641), missing data on egg consumption (n = 365), or missing data on potential confounders: smoking, alcohol intake, BMI, exercise, hypertension, and fruits and vegetables (n = 362).
The highest quintile of CAL had higher prevalence odds of IFG (OR 1.55 [95% CI 1.16 2.07], P for trend <0.01) and diabetes (4.77 [2.69–8.46], P for trend <0.01) after adjusting for age, sex, education, income, race, smoking, alcohol intake, missing teeth, dental visits, BMI, central adiposity, and physical activity (Table 2) compared with the lowest quintile.
Another limitation is the missing analysis of possible relationships between smoking, alcohol and weight status.
The analysis reported here included 149 794 participants who were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes at baseline; provided birth weight data; and had no missing data on diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, or body weight at baseline.
