In the end, Holt couldn't be sure that the Greenwood police had planted drops of the victim's blood on Elmore's pants; couldn't explain how pivotal evidence the prosecutor had long said was lost miraculously reappeared; couldn't say who committed the murder, though she seems to have come tantalizingly close to doing so.
