There were minor changes with small effect sizes in scores for Relevance and Sympathy across the three test occasions (Table 3).
Meta-analyses and collaborative consortia with large sample sizes have allowed GWASs to detect risk variants with low minor allele frequencies (< 5%) and small effect sizes (odds ratio of about 1.1 to 1.7) (Box 1); SNP association studies may have already reached their limit to detect clinically or biologically relevant loci with such effect sizes [ 8, 11, 13, 17, 18].
Because ACPA-negative RA represents a minor subset of RA, it is difficult to perform the association analysis to detect common variants with small effect sizes.
A sample size of 2064 cases and 2662 controls would have detect a OR of 0.8 for a protective effect of minor allele (effect size found in CKD-GWAS) with a power of 80% and alpha error of 5% (http://www.openepi.com).
