Of course, not all individually dispensable genes can be removed at once from an organism, meaning that a collection of single knock-out experiments cannot itself provide instructions for constructing a minimal organism.
The concept of a minimal organism is quite appealing and thus several attempts to construct biological systems with minimized gene sets have been undertaken in the past few years [ 3, 4].
