NP tissues were finely minced into small fragments of approximately 2 mm and digested with 0.02 % w/v pronase (Sigma-Aldrich) (37 °C, 5%% CO2, 1 h) in 20 ml DMEM (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium), containing 1 % penicillin/streptomycin, 1 % glucose and 10%% FCS (fetal calf serum) (Sigma-Aldrich).
