The United States and Laos have a difficult relationship that dates to the C.I.A.'s undeclared war in the 1960s and '70s, when American warplanes dropped 270 million bombs on this country, many of which are still buried in fields and forests.
During that notorious conflict, the US dropped more than 270 million bombs in Laos as part of a CIA-run, top-secret operation aimed at destroying the North Vietnamese supply routes along the Ho Chi Minh trail and wiping out its local communist allies.
From March 1965 through November 1968, Operation Rolling Thunder unleashed 800 tons of munitions a day on North Vietnam, a total of a million bombs, rockets, and missiles.
According to one report, in Laos where they were also used, 80 million bombs failed to detonate and, long after the conflict there ended, have been responsible for countless injuries among those who encountered them.
Four decades on, the people of Laos are still dealing with the consequences of the 80 million bombs (out of the 270 million that were dropped) that didn't detonate.
Nearly 78 million bombs are sitting unexploded in the soil of Laos around villages, school grounds, rice fields, and roads— a deadly result of being one of the most heavily bombed countries per capita in the world.
