The MIDAS scores showed that 59 (34.9%) students had minimal disability, with a mean score of 4. Thirty-two (18.9%) students had mild disability, with a mean score of eight.
The MIDAS scores showed that 13 (41.9 %) students had minimal disability with a mean score of 3. Five (16.1 %) students had mild disability with a mean score of 8. Six (19.3 %) had moderate disability with a mean score of 13, and finally, seven (22.5 %) had severe disability with a mean score of 25 (Table 3).
Both men and women had mild disability with a median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score of 2. The average number of years since diagnosis was 6 years, and 59% of the sample was on Disease Modifying Therapies.
At analysis, physical function was further categorized as normal (without any difficulty); mild disability (with difficulty in at least one mobility task); moderate disability (with difficulty in both IADL and mobility tasks), and severe disability (with difficulty in ADL, IADL, and mobility tasks).
Both men and women had mild disability with a median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score of 2. The top 10 domains that patients identified to be the most affected by their MS were, work (62%), fatigue (48%), sports (39%), social life (28%), relationships (23%), walking/mobility (22%), cognition (21%), balance (14%), housework (12%) and mood (11%).
For the progressively severe trajectory, the predicted value underestimated the observed value at month 10 and overestimated the observed value at month 4. None the less, the mean probability of membership for each trajectory was 0.9 or higher except for progressively mild disability, with a value of 0.89.
By contrast, using HCA, indirect costs were lower in 2011 than in 2002 for patients with mild disability (€5842 compared to €5393), with good function (€2217 compared to €1137), and with severe disability (€29 133 compared to €26 789), whereas, there was an increase in those with moderate disability (from €14 375 to €15 026).
In total, the average annual costs rose by €3347 for patients with severe disability, by €2206 with moderate disability, and by €2204 with mild disability, and by €1114 for patients with good functional capacity.
Half the patients with spinal polio recover fully; one-quarter recover with mild disability, and the remaining quarter are left with severe disability.
Thus 30(43%) treatments were performed for patients without symptoms, 31(44%) with symptoms but no or only mild disability and 9(13%) with moderate or significant disablity i.e. mRS 3 5.
For patients at working age (figure 2), the direct costs increased in patients with poor function (HAQ>2 3) from €9374 to €11 376, in those with moderate disability (HAQ>1 2), from €5498 to €11 109, in patients with mild disability (HAQ>0.5 1) from €3573 to €6930, and in those with good function (HAQ≤0.5) from €2514 to €4473.
