During the first two decades of the 20th century, the notable feature of internal migration was the movement from eastern Canada to the Prairie Provinces.
That migration was the first step in a movement that would send Japanese migrants to Hawaii, North and South America, and, with the growth of Japanese militarism, to Manchuria and other corners of Asia.
The historian Darlene Clark Hine has written that a key if seldom-discussed factor in the Great Migration was the desire of black women to escape the sexual exploitation implicit in domestic work — a concern that had also driven enslaved women to run away.
On hand to depict the Great Migration was the young African-American artist Jacob Lawrence, who painted 60 panels capturing the migration in all its facets.
