Although not all zoonotic pathogens are emerging infectious diseases, many have wildlife reservoirs, and the increasingly indistinguishable boundary between human civilization and wild animal habitats has resulted in the migration of these pathogens to domestic animals where they have become well-established [ 3, 4].
This strain of P. infestans was responsible for the first global migration of the pathogen in the 1840s, and then persisted for at least 50 years.
Some widely used phylogeographic models treat the migration of a pathogen as though it were analogous to mutation (Kühnert et al., 2011), mainly for computational expediency.
