Sprouting angiogenesis is initiated in response to the local production of tissue-derived proangiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, which bind to cognate receptors on the endothelium and induce the specification and migration of leading tip cells, stimulate the proliferation of the neighboring stalk cells to elongate the sprouts and form the lumen.
