Macroscopic, microscopic, and high spatial resolution electron microprobe imaging support the common occurrence of small cracks and related flakes being closely associated with the corrosion product layers, i.e., (hairline) cracks are a common visible feature affecting the coherence of the sulfide corrosion layer and often also the adjacent calcite scale base (Figs. 4, 5).
Through a combination of methodological approaches, including light microscopic and high resolution immunogold cytochemistry, quantitative RT-PCR, and Western blotting, we demonstrate that the different members of this complex exhibit distinct ontogenic profiles––with the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins laminin and agrin appearing earlier than the other members of the complex.
