The ficolins bind to the acetyl groups on microbial surfaces such as N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), which is a chemical moiety on the pathogen-associated molecular patterns [3], [4], [7], [8], [9], [10], [15], [16], [18].
Many PAMPs are exposed and structurally conserved microbial surface structures, such as the outer membrane lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and cell wall peptidoglycan of bacteria, and components of the fungal cell wall.
Microbial growth on damp surfaces, such as that in air conditioners, represents one of the main bio-contamination sources in old buildings [ 7].
Microbial communities inhabiting mucosal surfaces such as the gastrointestinal tract can result in a significant mutualism including local immune homeostasis [ 35, 36], and protection from pathogens through processes such as nutrient consumption, occupation of attachment sites, and secretion of antimicrobial substances [ 37].
This failure of reductive decolorization usually led to biosorption or bioaccumulation of such dyes onto microbial surfaces and/or intracellular compartments (Chen et al. 2000; Chen 2002) via metabolism-dependent or -independent mechanisms, respectively.

However, properdin may bind preferentially to microbial surfaces and not to self surfaces [ 31].
The pH was another important factor which had great effect on the properties of microbial surface and flocculation, and such influence can change biochemical metabolism and the form of enzyme system [ 24].
In our study most genes encoding identified or putative adhesive proteins (such as microbial surface components recognizing adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs), the collagen adhesin ace and aggregation substances) were either not regulated or down-regulated during growth in blood.
Examples of E. faecalis surface-exposed virulence markers are capsular polysaccharides, glycolipids, surface-exposed LPxTG-type proteins, such as microbial surface components recognising adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs), like the collagen-binding protein Ace, pili called Ebp, and aggregation substances [ 8, 22- 26].
