In addition to the microarray platform, other new exciting technological developments have been introduced to expand our research capacity in terms of genome-wide interrogation and systems biology studies.
To compare measurements across a range of amplification methods, several microarray platforms and other quantification methods, such as qPCR and massive parallel sequencing, we used a uniform method to analyze performance.
Several studies have used samples from biological tissue to compare multiple microarray platforms with other measurement technologies, either mixing RNA from two tissues at known ratios [ 21] or harvesting RNA in stimulated and unstimulated conditions [ 22, 23].
Another important goal attained by this project is to generate a thoroughly characterized reference data set against which new modifications in the existing microarray platforms and other expression measurement technologies can be compared and validated, and laboratory performance can be assessed.
Although this may in part be explained by the use of different microarray platforms, among other differences, it has become increasingly evident that further data from well designed trials are needed to identify key determinants before these diagnostic techniques may be introduced into the clinical setting [ 25].
While we focused here on how this method can be used to search for novel RNA binding proteins, the protein microarray platform has other potential applications, including discovery of novel RNA-protein interactions for an individual RNA or a defined pool of RNAs.
A similar approach has already provided robust and flexible microarray platform in other fish species [ 10- 18].
For example, more miRNAs will be observed using a microarray platform than other low-throughput technologies [ 37, 38].
