It is shown that the reaction sequence probably involves the formation of methyl formate which then decomposes to give CO2 as the primary product; CO is formed by the reverse water gas shift reaction and this only occurs to an appreciable extent when the methanol is almost completely converted.
However, our calculations show that this hydrolysis process might have difficulties competing with desorption of methyl formate, which is weakly adsorbed on the PdZn surface.

In the methyl branch of the WLP, another molecule CO2 is reduced first to formate, which is then activated to formyl-THF in an ATP-dependent reaction [ 8, 9].
The fermentative route of hydrogen production in E. coli (Fig. 5) starts with the conversion of glucose to pyruvate, which is then converted to acetyl-CoA and formate, which is catalysed by pyruvate formate lyase (PFL).

Formation of methyl formate depends on the pressure of carbon monoxide in the reaction, suggesting that insertion of carbon monoxide to methyl iodide is a key step of the carbonylation and dimethyl ether reacts with the intermediate to form methyl formate.
Oxidation of the ether groups produced formates, which further decomposed to give ethylene and methyl formate, and regenerated the formates.
In the presence of surface OH species, methyl formate can further react to form formic acid, which can finally dehydrogenate to produce CO2.
