Even a source population with 50% less allelic richness than the French sample a value that is much higher than the observed standard deviation of that parameter in natural solitary bee populations (refer to Methods)–still yields one singly-mated female as the most likely founder population size (Figure 1A).
A simple linear regression model where the number of free parameters was further penalized (by Akaike information criterion [AIC], see Materials and Methods) still yields a median cross-validation R = 0.728 (supplementary fig. S11, Supplementary Material online), suggesting that our SVM estimates of fit are not inflated as a result of overfitting.
